Garda and the Lake
Already inhabited in the prehistoric age - as testified by the Necropolis and the Pictoglyphs on the path that takes to Torry del Benaco, it became an important Roman settlement, thereafter Franc-Longobardo. In the old part, Garda displays a characteristic Middle Ages look, facing the lake with a tree-lined Promenade where at the end we find the immense English-style Park of Villa Albertini. This is one of the major structure of the Lake, several refurbishments across a number of years, have brought to today's Mediaeval castle style with its 4 embattled towers. Here, Carlo Alberto on the 10th of June 1848, received the annexation of Lombardia and Piemonte regions. Not far away from Garda, and still at a walking distance, we can reach L'EREMO DEI CAMALDONESI, close to the famous 'Rocca'.
Garda is situated half way up the East side of Lake Garda, facing
a wide gulf. It's territory is enclosed between the Rocca (south), the Monte
Luppia (nord) and a crown of hills at the East side; a rather small territory,
but an attractive landscape with historic and touristic features.
Just above San Vigilio, we find Monte Luppia, a strategic point over the
Lake. From the area 'Castei' one can admire the magnificent Panorama above
the 'Baia delle Sirene'. Garda counts 3 beaches: the 1st to the south, under
the Rocca. The 2nd, larger and more frequented, to the north. The 3rd, so
called 'Baia delle Sirene', located close to Punta San Vigilio. A recommended
walk is to follow the Promenade along the lake shore to the South from Garda
to Bardolino (3 km).

ARCHITECTUR
The historic architectural center of Garda, fully conserve the original urban plan, with buildings facing the small characteristics lanes. Among those buildings, are some which belong to Noble families who over the last centuries have chosen Garda as their main vacation and living area:
- - Palazzo dei Capitani, Venetian-Gotic style, built around XIV - XV century
- - Villa Carlotti, next to 'Torre Civica', it is a large structure of XVI century by a design of Mr. Sanmicheli
- - Palazzo Fregoso, built at the beginning of 1500 from the Genoese Condottiere Cesare Fregoso.
Between Garda and San Vigilio we can find:
- Villa Degli Albertini (sixteenth-century), surrounded by a magnificent
park, embraced by embattled walls. Today's Medieval look is due to restructuring
work (nineteenth-century). Close by we find the small church of San Carlo
Borromeo
- Villa Carlotti Canossa, built around XVIII e il XIX century by Marquises Carlotti when they moved from their ancient Palace in the center of Garda. The Palace/Villa ? was then enlarged around the end of nineteenth-century , and presents now a tipical eighteenth-century architecture. To note is the wide park facing the Villa.
